In the opening talk of the series, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Gürkan explored how media professionals in Turkey report on murders and portray alleged perpetrators. In-depth interviews with journalists from different generations shed light on critical issues, such as the positioning of women in the media, the narratives that justify murders, and the portrayal of female victims. Gürkan emphasized that journalists’ adherence to a so-called objective reporting approach often limits the way they address gender-based violence.
Findings indicate that media professionals, consciously or unconsciously, reinforce gender roles. The prevalent use of masculine language and the lack of a feminist perspective in news coverage stand out as key concerns. The perspectives of journalists from Generation X, Y, and Z offer valuable insights into shifting societal perceptions and media representations.
While the RTC Projections series brings academic research to a wider audience, it also fosters critical discussions. On Wednesday, March 12, at 2:00 PM, Dr. Aslı Ildır will deliver a talk titled "Digital Platforms and the Changing Culture of Viewership," exploring the transformation of audience habits in the digital media ecosystem. Then, on Wednesday, March 26, at 2:00 PM, Prof. Dr. Nezih Erdoğan will present "From Al-Bait al Muzlim to Waliczky’s Imaginary Cameras: Rethinking the Apparatus," delving into the evolving meanings of vision and cinema throughout history.
The series will continue with diverse topics and fresh perspectives. All interested participants are welcome to join!
