In the new age of the 21st century, it is now realized that the essence of the universe and evolution is not the atoms of matter, but information. The transfer of information is the main factor of the evolutionary adventure of humanity. Communication is our phenomenal activity through which this transmission is achieved. The phenomenon of mass communication and the its technology media, created the conditions of milestones in human history. Great narratives are only possible with the change of mass media. Therefore, all new eras in human history started with the invention of a new mass media. This pattern of events I have described also reveals that the use of mass media has evolutionary effects, that we are talking about a tremendous power, and that it should therefore be mastered and managed with the awareness and responsibility it deserves.
The media, which has an umbilical cord with technological developments, is in a state of constant renewal and motion with the exponentially increasing speed of technology. The scope of “new media” concept is also in constant change to define the most up-to-date media technology. For this reason, the academic education of this highly dynamic scientific discipline and profession requires not only covering the latest technological applications, but also teaching timeless theories that are future-proof. With this point of view, there should be a holistic understanding of education in which theory and practice feed each other.
The mass media of the new age we live in, namely the new media, are highly visual and tactile, immersive, non-linear, and interactive. At this point, visual design skills are required in conjunction with storytelling and communication skills.
With this vision and awareness, we offer İstinye University New Media Department students a design-oriented education that combines theory and practice, covers both new technologies and consequent social trends, and theories that resistant to the rapid change of time. We aim to raise you as a successful and creative media professional who is conscious and responsible for our values that make us human.
