Actor, playwright, screenwriter, and magician Kubilay Tunçer was the guest of the "Screen and Beyond Talks" program organized by the Media Center (Media Lab.) of Istinye University's Faculty of Communication. Emphasizing that storytelling is one of humanity's most fundamental needs, from theater to cinema, Tunçer also made significant statements regarding performing arts and digital transformation.
"Stories Bring People Together"
In the talk moderated by Dr. Özgenur Reyhan Güler, Tunçer touched on topics such as creativity, art, and human psychology, highlighting that storytelling is the greatest element that unites societies. "All states, families, love stories, and mythologies are essentially based on narrative. Storytelling is the foundation of humanity's ability to live together," said Tunçer, adding that performing arts and screenwriting are modern extensions of this tradition.
"The World Is Changing Fast, Can Our Brain Keep Up?"
Speaking about digital transformation and the changing media landscape, Tunçer questioned whether the human mind is adapting to this intense flow of information. "It is debatable whether the human brain is ready for such an overwhelming flow of information. Perhaps we should learn to adapt ourselves to these new conditions instead of trying to change the world," he stated.
"Characters Build the Story"
Tunçer also emphasized the connections between performing arts, screenwriting, and theater, sharing insights into the process of creating characters and narrative techniques. "When creating characters, you should get close to them and pay attention to their details. This offers a great experience not only for actors but also for viewers and readers," he said.
"Storytelling Requires Expertise"
At the end of the event, Kubilay Tunçer answered students' questions, emphasizing that storytelling is a field that requires expertise. "This is not something everyone can do. Storytelling requires serious responsibility and competence," he said. He stressed that anyone interested in performing arts should go through a disciplined process of learning and practice.
The event was attended by students and academics from Istinye University's Faculty of Communication. At the end of the program, Tunçer was presented with a plaque of appreciation by the faculty dean, Prof. Dr. Hatice Öz Pektaş. Students who participated in the talk gained new perspectives on the depth of storytelling and the power of art through the Q&A session, and the event was followed with great interest.
